The Laboratory of Criminological Sciences participates in the transnational European research project entitled: Fair predictions of gender-sensitive recidivism – FAIR-PRESONS funded by the European Commission. Greece, Portugal and Bulgaria, coordinated by the University of the Aegean, participate in the program as partners.
The program aims to develop an unbiased AI system to provide for a prediction of the reiteration of crime, emphasizing gender equality, in compliance with EU legislation on an undiscriminatory artificial intelligence. To achieve this, the programme will first carry out a gender analysis, for the mapping of the impact that its work and activities will have on women and men, and then collect data on the convictions of men and women (adults and minors) convicted with sanctions of deprivation of freedom and measures, it will digitize them and substantiate them with appropriate metadata and parameters in accordance with EU standards.
The Democritus University of Thrace participates as a partner in the project through the Laboratory of Criminological Sciences of the Law School with a research group consisted of doctoral candidates whose issues of doctoral theses are on artificial intelligence in relation to the administration of justice and anti-crime policy.
The research team of the Laboratory is invited to the project to create a legal framework that will describe the roles and responsibility of lawyers as operators of the tools, but also the legal framework of the operation of the tools at all stages of criminal justice. At the same time, ethical guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in the field of criminal justice will be developed.
